Expectations

My apologies, for a man who lives via words, I confess to failing to find the right ones for this week’s blog. It was to have been an examination of  expectations. I was going to explore my expectations when I begin to open a fresh doorway into imagined characters and their world.

I was to then take your hand and try to interpret what you, the reader, would be expecting on your journey. Would innocence be abandoned to unlock deeper emotions?

Instead, I have decided to try and illustrate expectations, via the opening paragraphs of an upcoming new story. The story “A Student’s Service" is part of the Dark Site series. I hope you enjoy this taster. If so there will be more themed tasters to come.

A Student’s Service

Beatrice, a nineteen year old art student, stepped off the bus, the driver watched her leave the stop within the University’s grounds. It was a chilly autumn evening, leaves blowing about in the breeze. So the young student had broken out her passion killer, a vintage military trench coat. She’d found it in one of her best charity shops. It did her figure no favours, reaching down to her ankles. It was a men's coat,  but she couldn’t resist it. She’d altered the buttons to make it fit a little better, but the belt held it tighter. It kept out the cold and the wet if it rained. On her head, an old trilby bought at the same time.

Taking out her phone she pulled up her email again;

“Report to Mr Collins, Room D5, lower floor, Old Art wing at 19:30. There, your application to the Student Discretionary Fund, will be discussed and you will be assessed.”

Beatrice, like so many of her friends, found it increasingly difficult to manage on the Student Loan she received. The rising cost of living, her art supplies, accomodation, rare nights out, all were going up in price. Her loan was not keeping pace. There was a real risk that she, like her boyfriend Jay, may have to quit Uni.
